7/18 How sustainable is your favorite Pittsburgh restaurant?
This week, Sustainable Pittsburgh just made it easier for us to support restaurants that align with our values. The nonprofit has launched the Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant Program, a program that recognizes restaurants that aim for a “triple bottom line” in Southwestern PA. A triple bottom line demands focus not only on profits but also on people and the planet.

7/16 Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant program open for business
The possibility that the Pittsburgh region could become a national forerunner in the still-emerging restaurant sustainability movement became a reality July 16.

6/27 Millenials, developers increasingly drawn to Homestead
“We have a great location. We are on the city side of the Squirrel Hill tunnels with very affordable housing. In the early 1900s, when the mills were booming, they built this housing stock to last. It’s close to a walkable business district right on the Great Allegheny Passage Bike Trail and a number of regional and recreational assets.”
The bike trail is a great draw for many people. Homestead has bike racks and a bike corral provided by Sustainable Pittsburgh.
6/16 City of Pittsburgh selects consultant team to assist with Uptown Ecoinnovation District plan
Court Gould, Executive Director of Sustainable Pittsburgh said, “Pittsburgh’s strategic investment in the future of Uptown is a watershed moment in lifting up the principles of sustainable development for lasting prosperity for the benefit of all neighborhoods. The choice of Interface Studio backs this commitment by deploying a world-class team to address social, economic, and environmental imperatives in this pilot effort to demonstrate the community sustaining impact of the new EcoInnovation District framework.”
6/12 Pittsburgh flexes its sustainability muscle
Establishing management systems and practices, and then reporting publicly to key stakeholders, are key tenets of the process. Ultimately, a company should be able to align its sustainability strategy to its corporate strategy, as well as to its stakeholders’ concerns.
The same approach can be used by a region to identify and prioritize sustainability issues, and then develop and implement initiatives to address them.
Sustainable Pittsburgh and Southwest Pennsylvania are well on their way to achieving this regional level of coordination and execution. As a region, SWPA can tackle material environmental issues such as waste, carbon emissions and water use.
