Conducting a sustainability assessment enables municipal leaders to more strategically advance community initiatives, improve internal operations, foster sustainable community development, and realize lower costs using benchmarking, goal setting, community engagement, and implementation tools.

During this webinar, join Jim Price of Sustainable Pittsburgh for a deep dive into the resources and tools available through sustainability self-assessments and professional consultations.  Participants will be better equipped to evaluate benefits and opportunities found in each, and to select an approach that meets their specific needs and priorities.

The Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification, a program of the Pennsylvania Municipal League, is a free and voluntary option for self-assessment.  (Certification is a factor that the PA Dept. of Community and Economic Development considers when reviewing municipal applications for grants and loans.)  A professional sustainability assessment, however, is more formal, customizable, and takes a more comprehensive look at municipal operations and policies.  Both approaches result in actionable steps that help improve operational efficiencies, create a better work environment, and provide a “scorecard” for recognizing achievements and setting priorities for sustainable improvement.

Specific resources to be addressed include: how to create and manage an official sustainability program, establishing environmental action committees (EACs), and incorporating sustainability into the government’s leadership culture.
