The Clean Water Academy 2017
7-17-2017 @ 9:00 am - 7-21-2017 @ 3:00 pm
FreeALCOSAN’s Clean Water Academy is a FREE, week-long STEM enrichment program for students attending high school in the service area. The session runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on July 17 – 21, 2017.
In partnership with Carlow University, the program is designed to expose high school students to science, technology, engineering, and math content relating to wastewater treatment.
Students will spend time touring the treatment plant, laboratory, and learning about our facility and its connection with 83 customer municipalities. The activities are designed within the context of systems thinking and sustainability, meaning learners will have the opportunity to explore unique qualities of individual parts of the systems while considering the sum of those parts through the design and construction of a mini living system capable of sustaining aquatic life.
ALCOSAN is the clean water agency for most of Allegheny County. Every day, the agency recycles up to 250 million gallons of wastewater, stormwater and groundwater, returning the water to the Ohio river, cleaner than the river itself.
