SUMMARY:COVID-19 Casualty: Tax Revenue Where from Here for Regional Municipalities?
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic is anticipated to critically impact nearly $1 billion in tax revenues for southwestern Pennsylvania municipalities. Cities\, boroughs and township – which provide the basic public services that citizens and businesses rely on daily – and will be facing financial crises as a result of the economic shutdown. To get a handle on this\, the Center for Metropolitan Studies at the University of Pittsburgh formed the Municipal Finance Research Collaborative\, with the Allegheny Conference public policy research affiliate – the Pennsylvania Economy League of Greater Pittsburgh – as a partner on an analysis that explores answers to these three questions: \n\nWhat was the state of municipal government finances before the pandemic hit?\nHow much municipal revenue will be lost in 2020?\nHow many cities\, townships\, or boroughs will lack the resources to provide basic services and continue to operate in 2020 and 2021?
