SUMMARY:"Parcel Scale Green Infrastructure Siting and Cost Effectiveness Analysis for Pittsburgh\, PA"
DESCRIPTION:UCSUR’s Brown Bag Speakers Series Presents…\n\nMichael Blackhurst\, Ph.D.\, Research Development Manager\, Urban and Regional Analysis Program\, University of Pittsburgh Center for Social and Urban Research \nSeminar Title: Parcel Scale Green Infrastructure Siting and Cost Effectiveness Analysis for Pittsburgh\, PA\nThe Pittsburgh region is served by a combined sewer\, which collects\, conveys\, and partially treats both stormwater and wastewater in the same infrastructure system. During periods of heavy rainfall\, stormwater can exceed the capacity of combined sewers\, which causes overflow into nearby rivers and streams. While these combined sewer overflows (CSOs) mitigate upstream flooding\, they release untreated wastewater into receiving water bodies. Improvements to “gray” infrastructure – pipes\, pumps\, storage\, and treatment facilities – can increase the capacity of the collection system to accommodate more severe wet weather events\, but “green” infrastructure includes features that reduce the stormwater entering the collection system by retaining or diverting stormwater. This project works towards a comprehensive green infrastructure strategy by identifying broad areas appropriate for green infrastructure\, given variation in hydrologic (land use plus topography) and hydraulic (the capacity of pipes\, pumps\, and treatment)\, then applying a mix of additional criteria to target specific installations. A demonstration of green infrastructure siting and cost effectiveness is demonstrated through in an interactive mapping project. \nVisit the map – Recommended Siting of Green Infrastructure by Type in Allegheny County:  http://sb.ucsur.pitt.edu/steve/green/index.html

SUMMARY:"White Privilege: Not so Invisible Anymore?"
DESCRIPTION:The Center on Race and Social Problems at the University of Pittsburgh is proud to host Dr. Paul Croll of Augustana College for the second lecture in the Reed Smith LLP Spring 2017 Speaker Series\, with an introduction by Carlos Torres\, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations. \nDr. Croll is an expert in the field of critical race and whiteness studies\, and co-author of Race and Ethnicity: The Basics. He has published many articles in top sociology journals regarding US racial attitudes\, white racial identity\, and color-blind ideologies. His research and teaching focuses on examining race relations through a sociological framework. \n“While we have made great strides in the post-civil rights era\, we continue to see racial discrimination in employment\, wealth\, education\, and the criminal justice system. In a recent audit study\, researchers found that employers discriminated against African Americans and Latinos in job searches and “black job seekers fared no better than white men just released from prison.” The wealth gap between whites and people of color continues to grow. . . Hard work alone does not guarantee success. To say otherwise is to ignore our nation’s history.” \nRead more: “Awareness\, Not an Apology” \nNo RSVP required; lunch provided. \nOverflow room will be available during the event in Room CL 2101.  All lectures are recorded and uploaded to crsp.pitt.edu in the days following the lecture.

SUMMARY:Light\, Energy\, and Environmental Sensing—A Responsive Vision for Public Art
DESCRIPTION:Learn how teams of experts leverage the Cloud Factory for ideas about data visualization and the environment. For five days\, teams comprised of Pittsburgh-based artists\, designers\, architects\, scientists\, environmentalists\, teachers\, students\, and other creative minds\, led by artist Andrea Polli\, turned CMOA’s Hall of Architecture into an idea-generating lab. Each team used the Bellefield Boiler Plant\, or “cloud factory\,” as a site for data collection factors like on pollution\, energy\, weather\, and climate. They then investigated how public art and data visualization could engage communities with environmental issues using light as the primary tool. Stop by to hear each team’s proposal for our own back yard “cloud factory” as a potential site for imaginative intersection of art and science.
