SUMMARY:Virtual Biophilia: Pittsburgh February Meeting – A Black Plantswoman in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Biophilia Pittsburgh. \nJoin us for a conversation with Dr. Georgia Silvera Seamans\, a member of the #BlackBotanistsWeek organizing committee. Last year\, a series of social media movements swept the internet and brought attention the lack of racial equity in the sciences and access to nature in the US. Starting with #BlackBirdersWeek\, a response to a racist incident in Central Park\, social media burst with naturalists and researchers of color taking stage and promoting diversity in fields of science with related movements like #BlackInStem\, #BlackInMarineSciences\, #BlackInAstro\, and #BlackInNeuro\, to name a few. Dr. Silvera Seamans will discuss the initiative’s founding\, mission\, and current and future projects. Dr. Silvera Seamans will also share notes on her biodiversity monitoring and education work in NYC.

SUMMARY:First Peoples Past & Present: Native Health and Voting Power
DESCRIPTION:Pittsburgh is known as a city with a rich colonial past\, but the Native American perspective is often lost in the retelling of this history. Thus\, our students (many of whom are from Pittsburgh and broader Pennsylvania)\, as well as the Pittsburgh community would greatly benefit from learning about the Native people who once lived here and the Native community that now calls this city their home. \nThis event series will focus on elucidating the Native American past and present in Pittsburgh and across the United States. Beginning with a panel presentation speaking to the current health crisis’ effects on Native communities and the resiliency of Native people\, this series will go on to examine topics like the intersection of Black and Native histories and genealogies.. \nFirst Peoples Past & Present: Native Health and Voting Power\nWednesday\, January 27\, Noon – 1:30 p.m.\nRegistration: RSVP form \nPanelists: \n\nGregory Evans Dowd\, PhD – Professor of History and American Culture\, University of Michigan\nKimberly R.
