SUMMARY:A Petrochemical Plant for Our Neighbor? The Rest of the Story
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Iris Carter\, Ann Rolfes\, and the PBS POV Movie\, “Fenceline: A Company Town Divided” \nWhat happens when a major petrochemical manufacturing plant becomes the heart of a community’s strategy for social and economic development? What remains after the sales pitches\, promising jobs and prosperity fade into the reality of living amidst a massive chemical production plant? \nWhat can Beaver County residents concerned about their community’s future learn from those who have lived through such changes? Iris Carter and Ann Rolfes have spent their lives close to petrochemical facilities in Louisiana (Norco and Lafayette). \nThese two educators have valuable insights to share about how local citizens can address the social and health impacts of such facilities. Framing their stories and advice will be a screening of the PBS POV video Fenceline: A Company Town Divided. \nSpeakers from Beaver County communities will also share their own questions and concerns. \nCome hear. Come watch. Come share. \nCome learn answers to the vital question: “What can I do?” \nPresented by: Cracker Plant Initiative\, Create Lab\, Clean Air Council\, Clean Water Action\, BCMAC\, and ACCAN

SUMMARY:Millvale Cash Mob!
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday\, December 3\, Sustainable Pittsburgh and the Business Association of Millvale invite individuals to shop and celebrate the Sustainable Small Business Designation of 17 businesses in the Borough during a Cash Mob!  The Cash Mob\, which is slated to occur between 1:00 pm and 5:30 pm\, is happening in conjunction with Millvale’s Yuletide Tour and holiday tree lighting.  Sales\, sleigh rides\, performances and raffle prizes are all part of the festivities. \nShoppers interested in participating in the Cash Mob should pick up a “passport” at Millvale Library.  Visit participating businesses with the passport to collect stickers. Each sticker means one entry into a raffle for various prizes! \nSustainable businesses manage and operate in ways that simultaneously are good for their bottom line\, the environment\, and the social fabric of their communities.  The Southwestern PA Sustainable Small Business Designation\, one of Sustainable Pittsburgh’s award winning performance programs\, recognizes small businesses that incorporate sustainable practices as their strategy for success. \n“With a stated goal of developing a green business district within Millvale’s EcoDistrict Plan\, the community’s partnership with Sustainable Pittsburgh is one of the ways we are working towards accomplishing that goal\,” said Zaheen Hussain\, Millvale Sustainability Coordinator.  “The businesses who have taken steps to become more sustainable alongside the community are truly leaders in the community\, and we hope more residents and businesses follow suit.” \nThe Millvale Cash Mob is the sixth cash mob hosted by Sustainable Pittsburgh’s Champions for Sustainability network.  Over 200 establishments have earned the Sustainable Small Business Designation in 35 communities around the region.  Individuals are encouraged to visit them all for their shopping needs!

SUMMARY:Webinar: Cancer and Early Life Exposures to Environmental Pollutants
DESCRIPTION:While pediatric cancer is still a rare disease\, the rate of new cancers has increased nearly 30% since 1975. In the last decade\, a growing body of research associates increased risk of pediatric cancer with environmental exposures in utero and in childhood. Recent science also points to a role for early life exposures in priming the body for developing cancer in adulthood. \nIn this webinar\, presenters will review the state of the science on the contribution of environmental exposures in early life to cancer\, and reflect on its implications for clinical practice and engagement of health professionals in policy change. A special focus of the webinar will be on air pollution\, with information on exposures in the Allegheny County region.
