Of course, there was a time, as recently as the 1950s, that the United States was for all practical concerns a white man’s country. White women were less powerful, too. Now, it is increasingly obvious that our society is becoming truly multiracial.
This is a hard pill to swallow for many American whites, just as it was for those in South Africa when apartheid came to an end. The election of a black man as president of the United States underscored this national racial/ethnic identity struggle. To complicate matters, this is all taking place as the country also is trying to sustain its international identity as the sole military and economic superpower.
