Smart Growth advocate: ‘Aspire to build places people love’

Smart growth means, in part, that cities are designed so that everything we need and want are within walkable distances or connected to good transit service and that the environmental amenities that go with it — bike lanes, street trees — contribute to our health and our wallets. They favor density and people of all incomes. . .You know these places when you see them. They produce automatic smiles. They are places I like to think of as delicious. Not twee or frou-frou, not with flower boxes in every window, but places that have rhythm and grace, places that make you look around instead of hurrying through. Places that are interesting.
