Board rules state met environmental requirements in allowing Mars drilling wells

“Two wells at the heart of the dispute were drilled years ago, beginning in 2015. But the appeal remains relevant as courts slowly sort out the level of review expected of state officials to satisfy the state constitution’s newly rejuvenated mandate to protect clean air and water for current and future generations. . . .

The Geyer wells inspired a swell of opposition from neighbors and parents of students in the school district, which has four schools between half a mile and a mile from the well pad.

Opponents challenged a zoning decision that opened most of Middlesex Township to drilling, which spurred a countersuit from gas leaseholders who accused the environmental and parents groups of interfering with their ability to make money from their property.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has paused the zoning appeal until it resolves a case out of Lycoming County that raises similar issues.
