Past Sustainable Pittsburgh Programs & Initiatives
In 2019, Sustainable Pittsburgh launched a region-wide, three-week competition to engage residents in making the Pittsburgh region an even better place to live, work, and play. Called I Am Sustainable Pittsburgh, the competition featured dozens of sustainability-actions related to health and wellness, waste, transportation, food, and more. Check out the actions here, and see how you can incorporate them into your own life!
Straw Forward is a collaborative effort of restaurants, businesses, and nonprofits to collect used and littered plastic-based items and turn them into a work of art in order to raise awareness and foster meaningful dialogue around the global-scale issues of single-use plastic waste and plastic pollution. We collected single-use plastic straws and other plastic materials to build a sculpture, which we exhibited at the Carnegie Science Center from January 15, 2019 through February 15, 2019.
The Sustainable Pittsburgh Challenge enabled organizations to compete in a friendly, yearlong challenge program against peer organizations. The SP Challenge gives businesses, non-profits, municipalities, and colleges/universities the opportunity to include sustainability-based activities in an approachable competition that provides tools, information, and guidance necessary to reduce costs, improve performance, and increase long-term sustainability.
