Thank you and congratulations to all who participated in I Am Sustainable Pittsburgh! This inaugural, three-week event ended March 20 and challenged individuals to make small changes in their personal lives that collectively had a big impact for the Pittsburgh region.
Of the 1,115 individuals participating, there were 123 teams representing more than 70 organizations in the Pittsburgh area! (Several of these organizations are also active participants in the Sustainable Pittsburgh Challenge, a competition supporting sustainability in the workplace.)
Every action adds up to make a difference and that’s what we are seeing with the results. Highlights include up to:
- 4,122 plastic bottles not sent to the landfill
- 18,997 minutes not spent in front of a screen
- 14,622 pounds of CO2 saved
- 193 hours volunteered
- 98 pounds of paper saved
- 210 locally sourced meals consumed
- 1,119 miles traveled by carpool

The results are in! Sustainable Pittsburgh announced the winners of the Sustainable Pittsburgh Challenge during an evening reception on March 21 at PNC Park. More than 100 employers from throughout southwestern Pennsylvania demonstrated their commitments to sustainability and completed the 13-month competition, which focuses on workplace sustainability. Engagement and Social Equity were the two most popular focus areas in the competition. These include actions such as “assess your workplace diversity,” “assess pay-scale equity,” and “establish a workplace sustainability team.”
The combined efforts of Challenge participants resulted in more than 80 million kWh of energy saved – enough to power almost all of the single-family homes in Wilkinsburg for a year! These energy reductions are valued at more than $6.2 million in savings. Participants also saved enough water (20 million gallons) to fill more than 30 Olympic-size swimming pools—or PNC Park to a depth of 28.1 feet (as high as a three-story building)! Congratulations to these high performers.
