Small Business Saturday is November 25th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. On that day and throughout this holiday season, Sustainable Pittsburgh invites you to Shop Small, AND Sustainable at your local sustainable small businesses!
More than 200 small business owners in the region have earned recognition as a Sustainable Small Business. This program from Sustainable Pittsburgh elevates small business owners who are working to make their business and community more equitable, prosperous and environmentally responsible.
Please support designated Sustainable Small Businesses on November 25th and throughout this holiday season. Types of businesses include bakeries, clothing boutiques, hobby shops, florists, salons, barbers, restaurants, bookshops and so much more. A full list and map of the designated businesses are available here: shopsustainablesmallbiz.org.
You can help get the word out and celebrate southwestern Pennsylvania’s growing sustainable small business community using #shopsustainablesmallbiz.
Are you a business owner who would like to become part of this growing community? More information is available on Sustainable Pittsburgh’s Champions for Sustainability website.

Registrations are now open for the 2018 Sustainable Pittsburgh Challenge (previously known as the Pittsburgh Green Workplace Challenge)!
All businesses, nonprofits, colleges/universities, K-12 schools, and municipalities with operations in Southwestern Pennsylvania are invited to participate in this free and friendly competition. To earn points, participants measure improvements in energy, water, waste, air quality, and transportation, and advance social equity and employee engagement.
Networking, professional development, and technical assistance are all benefits to participating—in addition to gaining efficiencies in operations, reducing costs, and earning positive recognition! The Sustainable Pittsburgh team can work with participants to develop a customized game plan for success.
All organizations that sign up by November 30 earn 50 bonus points when the competition begins on January 1. Learn more and register your organization here: spchallenge.org/register.

After four years of eye-popping impacts chalked up by the more than 250 businesses and organizations competing in the Green Workplace Challenge, Sustainable Pittsburgh changed the name of the competition to better honor your good work and the essence of the program. We welcome you to the improved, newly named Sustainable Pittsburgh Challenge!
The many actions eligible for earning points in this competition go well beyond the realm of “green”. The social equity and workplace diversity actions embraced by competing organizations rival in number those related to waste and recycling, for example. Of course, the multitude of green actions remains available to participants. The Sustainable Pittsburgh Challenge encourages participants to take their efforts further, with the inclusion of a full spectrum of sustainable business practices. We have also removed the term, “workplace” from the name of the program in recognition of the broad reach many participating organizations have beyond their immediate workplace. For example, municipalities and nonprofit organizations often impact both the workplace and their community through policy and action.
