Policy Connection - The Workforce Reset: Labor Shortages and the Future of Our Economy

May 6, 2026 by Meredith Benek

Event Overview:

Workforce shortages are emerging as a defining challenge for communities across Southwestern Pennsylvania, as population decline and an aging demographic reshape the region’s labor supply. Join Sustainable Pittsburgh for the upcoming Policy Connection webinar, The Workforce Reset: Labor Shortages and the Future of Our Economy. The program will explore how these structural trends are impacting economic growth, essential services, and community stability.

This virtual conversation will bring together an academic perspective on labor market dynamics, a community case study highlighting how a post-industrial region is navigating population and workforce change, and a local workforce and industry perspective on building stronger talent pipelines. Experts will examine how communities can respond through coordinated workforce, economic development, and community strategies to support long-term regional resilience.
