Past Initiatives

We work on projects that solve urgent or emergent sustainability challenges. These solutions are put into practice today and demonstrate what is possible. Our sustainability problems – from racial equity to climate change – are complex. Our solutions need to be equally sophisticated and accomplish multiple goals simultaneously.

Allegheny Eats

Our mission is to secure the future for our restaurants, farmers, and service industry workers with the help of food lovers beyond the COVID-19 crisis. In just under six months in 2021, Sustainable Pittsburgh, with the help of a network of partners and donors like you, delivered 14,000 meals to service industry workers impacted by Covid-19.

Choose Local

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many local businesses have found themselves in serious jeopardy. Hosted by Sustainable Pittsburgh and CEOs for Sustainability, Choose Local brought together organizations and consumers from across Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties to advocate for our local businesses and support vibrant local communities.

Plastics Collaborative

The Plastics Collaborative is a network comprised of diverse-minded and cross-sector organizations in southwestern PA. Its work is primarily around education, policy recommendations, and pilot projects to reduce single-use plastics in the greater Pittsburgh region.

Straw Forward

Straw Forward was a collaborative initiative of restaurants, businesses, and nonprofits to collect used and littered plastic-based items and turn them into a work of art in order to raise awareness and foster meaningful dialogue around the global-scale issues of single-use plastic waste and plastic pollution.
