Sustainability Assessments of Developments of Regional Importance

July 21, 2016 by Ginette Walker Vinski

Sustainable Pittsburgh has updated its criteria in working with developers to conduct Sustainability Assessments of Developments of Regional Importance.

This collaborative, no fee service engages closely with developers early in their planning process. Our focus is on developments outside the City of Pittsburgh that entail significant land use and size and whose impacts will be beyond the given site. The aim is to integrate the win-wins of sustainability in proposed developments from the start through planning, design, and construction to completion. The goal is to explore aspects of the development to be applauded as strong examples of sustainability and to determine areas for improvement. Sustainable Pittsburgh stands ready to speak favorably to a development project’s sustainability based upon sufficient performance against criteria and collaborative developer engagement.

In addition to our work with developers, this Sustainability Assessment is valuable for use by planning commissions, elected municipal boards, and municipal managers/secretaries to aid them in their deliberations. By addressing sustainability sensibilities before the first stone is turned, a municipality can ensure that they are protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the community long into the future.

If you know of a sizable development outside the City of Pittsburgh that is early in its planning, will have off-site impacts, and whose development team may benefit from this constructive evaluation, please contact Jim Price.
