Last week, members of CEOs for Sustainability and the Sustainability Practitioners Network gathered for a behind-the-scenes tour of PITT OHIO’s Pittsburgh terminal.
The tour brought together a diverse group of leaders from across industries, including manufacturing, transportation, consulting, government, and more, all eager to learn how sustainability is being put into practice in real-time operations.
Recognized for Sustainable Design

In 2017, PITT OHIO’s Pittsburgh terminal achieved LEED Gold certification, recognizing the facility’s energy-efficient design, use of sustainable materials, and commitment to reducing environmental impact. This achievement reflects their long-standing leadership in building and operating spaces that prioritize both environmental performance and employee well-being.
Harnessing the Power of the Wind

The facility’s WindStax wind turbines stood tall on-site, providing clean, renewable energy that helps power operations. Combined with PITT OHIO’s solar and microgrid systems, these turbines contribute to a resilient and efficient energy strategy.
Clean, Quiet, and Efficient: Electric Forklifts at Work

Inside the warehouse, attendees learned about the benefits of electric forklifts. These zero-emission machines not only boost operational efficiency but also help maintain cleaner air and a quieter environment for employees. The warehouse itself is heated using a geothermal system that warms the floors, providing energy-efficient climate control that supports both worker comfort and sustainability goals.
Leading the Charge with Electric Trucks

PITT OHIO’s newest electric truck greeted attendees outside the facility, representing the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing transportation emissions. These vehicles are a critical step toward cleaner freight solutions in the region and beyond.
Celebrating Leadership and Looking Ahead
We’re grateful to the PITT OHIO team for hosting us and sharing their journey. Special thanks to Patrick Linden for leading both tour groups and to Taki Darakos and Jim Maug for providing valuable information on fleet, facility, and sustainability operations. Their insights helped bring PITT OHIO’s commitment to sustainability to life for all who attended.
This tour is just one of the many ways CEOs for Sustainability helps executives learn from real-world examples. Under the leadership of its President Chuck Hammel, a CEOs for Sustainability member, PITT OHIO continues to set the bar for integrating sustainability into core business strategy, from clean transportation and renewable energy to sustainable building design.
We look forward to continuing these conversations through upcoming events. If you are a C-Suite executive of a well-aligned company with operations in southwestern Pennsylvania, consider joining the network and complete this interest form.
