By now you’ve probably heard that Sustainable Pittsburgh is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year! To mark this major milestone, over the next several weeks we’ll be featuring our accomplishments, in the lead up to a very special anniversary event on May 11 – for which we hope you can join us in person!
One of our more recent projects to highlight is the first ever Social Equity Sprint, a fun and friendly competition to help businesses, organizations, and municipalities jumpstart progress on social equity and earn recognition for their achievements.
Social equity is integral to sustainability, and takes place when everyone has the opportunity to engage, prosper, and reach their full potential.
From November 2022 until February 2023, twenty-four businesses, organizations, and municipalities competed against peers to earn points for their actions while improving the region in the Social Equity Sprint.
Actions focused on an organization’s commitment to social equity in its operations. Examples include how diversity, equity, and inclusion is promoted through the organization’s human resource policies and practices; whether it prioritizes diverse and local suppliers and vendors; and to what degree its outreach and marketing is inclusive. For municipalities, the program also includes questions about social equity in community development: issues like food access, housing affordability, environmental justice, and others.
The Social Equity Sprint wrapped with close rankings on the leaderboard. Who came out ahead? Join us May 11 when we reveal the Top Scorers! Come celebrate our Sprint participants and learn how they’ve made an impact in their organizations and communities.
