After scrupulously assessing their performance related to the 131 criteria in the statewide sustainability certification program, South Fayette Township, a growing community 15 miles south of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, found their efforts towards good governance rewarded. Sustainable Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Municipal League are pleased to announce and congratulate South Fayette Township for earning Gold in the Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification!
Community engagement is an important component of sustainable governance and South Fayette is among the best in the Commonwealth. The Township’s Police Chief embraces his role as a community leader by regularly hosting “Coffee with the Chief” events where all Township residents are welcomed to come discuss their public safety concerns. South Fayette Connect, a quarterly magazine that covers local events, topics and community news, was recognized nationally as an excellent example of a community news publication. South Fayette also hosts a Cleanup Day every spring in the spirit of Earth Day, encouraging residents to take pride in their community. Last year, 60 volunteers and township employees collected 525 bags of litter and 50 tires along 17 miles of roadway.
Other laudable South Fayette sustainability initiatives include:
- Providing educational material on stormwater, recycling and engagement at Community Day
- Facilitating CSA programs for fresh produce and agricultural awareness
- Solarize South Fayette – for expanding small scale solar energy
- Healthy Trails for recreation promotion
- Lend-a-Hand SF volunteer and Intern program
Thank you, South Fayette, for leading the way to a sustainable future!
